Why use image maps?

There are both advantages and disadvantages with using image maps. If the disadvantages aren't too troublesome, you'll find them an easy way to turn links into a work of art.

As to the advantages, first of all, you can use them in the same way you use picture links, but with the advantage of having many links for one picture. The coding is fairly easy to understand and it's much easier than the Javascript or Flash programming that serve as alternates to the image maps. Also, if you do them well, they can be mighty attractive.

On the down side, image maps can take a long time to make, especially if you have to plot out complicated patterns or can't find a good program that tells you the coordinates you need. If you let them, image maps can be terribly tricky.

With those things in mind, we'll start simple and get more complex as we go along. You can make the ultimate decision as to whether to put an image map on your pages.
