This is an easy tag to use. When you're writing an essay, and you have a very long quote from someone, you indent both the right and left sides. The quote then stands out from the text. Here's an example. See if you can spot the quote.
Thomas Jefferson was one of the "Founding Fathers" of the United States and our third president. Yet, even so, he was not a simple man. His life was complex. In the Declaration of Independence he wrote:
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
Yet this great supporter of human rights had slaves. How are these two things compatible? To understand Jefferson, we need to understand the times in which he lived and as much as we can about his own thoughts.

Well, I tried to make that obvious. If you'll notice, the blockquote puts a space between the quote and the surrounding words, and it also indents both ends. Here's how to make a block quote.

Remember that it's best to use blockquote for quotes. While it can be used for short-cut indenting, it's not recommended.
